Purpose of this Session
Following the Charismatic movement, which brought the Body of Christ into present truth (2 Peter 1:12), the Holy Spirit continued His work of restoration with the reestablishment of prophets and apostles in the Body of Christ. Prophets and Apostles have operated throughout the history of the church, such as William Branham and Paul Cain in the 40’s and several prophets in the 50’s and 60’s, but full revelatory recognition of these offices was only restored at this time.
Progressive Restoration of the ascension gifts
The 1950’s: Evangelist Deliverance Evangelism movement
The 1960’s: Pastor Charismatic Renewal
The 1970’s: Teacher Faith Teaching Movement
The 1980’s: Prophet Prophetic Movement
The 1990’s: Apostle Apostolic Movement
With the fivefold ministry gifts positioned, the present move of God is underway to bring the entire Body of Christ to full maturity according to Ephesians 4:11-12:
“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fulness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:11-13 NASB)
How the Prophetic/Apostolic movement began
Prophet Bill Hamon began proclaiming the coming move that would restore prophets and apostles in the early 1980’s. He spoke of a company of prophets and apostles whom God would raise up to fulfil the promise of Malachi 4:5-6, turning the hearts of the fathers to the sons and the sons to the fathers. In 1987 during a prophetic conference in Florida, a powerful spirit of intercessory warfare prayer swept into the meeting, like few had ever seen or experienced. Many prophesied and saw visions during this hour long intense move of God’s Spirit. Words came forth about the company of prophets and apostles whom God was about to release.
The following year, in October 1988, a similar spirit of prayer swept over an audience of over 800 delegates in a similar conference and for 50 minutes Prophet Hamon and the delegates in the conference travailed in intense prophetic intercessory prayer. This marked the beginning of the movement that inspired a host of books to be written and ministries to be released concerning the prophetic and apostolic in the church.
Also restored was the revelation of prophetic intercessory warfare prayer, and strong militant warfare praise. A militant and anointed army of believers is being prepared for end-time revelation of Christ’s message with dramatic demonstration of God’s love and power.
Major figures in the move include Rick Joyner, Cindy Jacobs, Bill Hamon, John Eckhardt, C. Peter Wagner. Bill Hamon and Peter Wagner worked together in propagating the movement much as Luther and Calvin did in the Great Reformation of the 1500’s, with Hamon having the original vision for the restoration, and Wagner giving theological definition and designation to what was taking place.
Great apostles have also been raised who have been instrumental in the extension and promotion of the Kingdom of God through the nations. Men such as Sunday Adelajah in the Ukraine and Ulf Ekman in Sweden are examples. Such men are part of a great company of such apostles who are operating under the anointing of the Father in our day.
God also raised men such as German evangelist, Reinhard Bonnke, whose mass crusades in Africa attracted crowds up to one million in a single meeting.
