Purpose of this Session
Many commentators consider this scroll to be a title deed. The earth itself was given into Adam’s authority, who then handed it to satan. None were found who could open the scroll and reclaim the earth – until Christ. The opening of scroll begins a chain of events leading to Christ’s final possession of the world once lost.
The series of signs following the opening of the seals reflects the signs described by Christ in Matthew 24 when He explained to His disciples those things that would precede His coming.
|The anti-Christ messianic deceiver “And I looked, and behold, a white horse. He who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.” (Revelation 6:2 NKJV)||“Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.” (Matthew 24:4-5 NKJV)|
|“Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.” (Revelation 6:4 NKJV)||“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.” (Matthew 24:6 NKJV)|
|“behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.”” (Revelation 6:5-6 NKJV)||“and there shall be famines.” (Matthew 24:6 NKJV)|
|“So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, and by the beasts of the earth.” (Revelation 6:8 NKJV)||“and pestilences, and earthquakes, in various places.” (Matthew 24:7 NKJV)|
These horses are also spoken of in Zechariah chapter 6, where they are identified as spirits who are unleashed to run to and fro throughout the earth.
We live in the days when these spirits of deception, war, famine and pestilence are running throughout the nations.
Revelation speaks of multitudes dying as a result of the tribulation, and ecological disasters on a scale greater than anything we have ever seen. The figures spoken of in Revelation may at one time have seemed outlandish, but with the development of nuclear and biological weapons, and the present panic over the balance of the ecosystem and global warming etc, John’s extravagant claims are all too close for comfort.
The sixth and seventh seals open what is referred to as the day of God’s wrath (Revelation 6:17). Entrance into this awful season in history is attended by great ecological upheaval and the preparation of God’s people for what is to come.
An ominous silence fills the heavens before the onslaught begins, contrasting the fury that is soon unleashed.
