Babel, situated in modern day Iraq, was the beginning of the ungodly kingdom, Babylon. Under the leadership of Nimrod:
“Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.” And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.” (Gen 10:8-10 NKJV)
A gigantic ziggurat was erected in honour of false Gods. Many commentators believe that the statement in Genesis 11:4 about the tower reaching the heavens is actually a reference to the fact that the tower was intended as a place of astrological worship, centred upon worship of the stars, and the demonic prince of the power of the air, satan himself.
This provoked God to scatter the population and confuse their languages. This took place in the days of Peleg:
“To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.” (Gen 10:25 NKJV)
Modern developments
Without entering too deeply into the discussion, modern developments on the global stage bear striking resemblance to the spirit behind the Babel rebellion.
In his book, New Age Globalism, H. Edward Rose wrote:
“We must not miss the central warning that resounds through the corridors of the long centuries to our time. The tower builders structured a mighty global organization, independent of God. They dedicated it to the establishment of a human unity which would secure them against the prospect of being scattered apart throughout the world.”
In the Humanist Manifesto II, under the heading, “World Community” we read:
“We deplore the division of humankind on nationalistic grounds. We have reached a turning point in human history where the best option is to transcend the limits of national sovereignty as to move toward the building of a world community… We look to the development of a system of world law and a world order based upon trans-national federal government”
Elsewhere in the same document, we read:
“What more daring a goal for humankind than for each person to become, in ideal as well as practice, a citizen of a world community.”
Such a dream of unity can only be righteously realised under Christ Jesus, and obedience to His will – to attempt this apart from God springs from the same source as the Babel rebellion.
ORIGINAL HUMANIST MANIFESTO
This document begins with the following statement:
“Religious humanists regard the universe as self-existing and not created…”
It declares explicitly:
“No deity will save us: we must save ourselves.”
The European Union
The Bible speaks in Daniel about the formation of a coalition in the former territory of the Roman Empire:
“As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.” (Dan 2:43-44 NKJV)
The world stage is certainly being set for the return of Christ. The frightening reality is that you and we no longer live in days where ‘business as usual’ is an option. We must wake up and consider carefully the wider picture, not merely the ‘church’ world. God is looking for intercessors and prophetic voices to be raised like trumpets in these days.
The tower of the Louise Weiss Building, the EU offices (shown below), although it looks unfinished, was designed with the expressed purpose of resembling the tower of Babel as depicted in Brueghel’s painting!
The European Union is clearly saying symbolically that their goal is a defiant reversal of an act of God, seeking to complete in our day what Nimrod began so many centuries ago.
The prophecy of Daniel chapter 2 tells us that this end-time attempt at unification will ultimately fail as an unfinished work, that it will soon be replaced by the Kingdom of God.
A fierce political agenda, driven by spiritual forces, will undoubtedly challenge the freedom of the church. Prepare your heart, as Jude encourages, to stand in whatever evil day may come, and defend the true Christian faith:
“Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.” (Jude 1:3 NKJV)
